1. 7 Years Later: Surviving Graduate School in Philosophy

  • Way back in summer 2011, I spent a lot of time browsing the internet for advice on how to succeed in graduate school, and while there was a lot of good advice scattered about the internet, it mostly existed in only small chunks. Moreover, some bits of advice conflicted with others, so it was hard to determine what perspective was correct when no consensus emerged. What I wanted was a single document that offered a comprehensive approach to graduate school in philosophy - something that synthesized all these bits and pieces of information into a digestible whole. But I could never find this elusive guide.

4. CFP: 5th Annual Philosophers' Cocoon Philosophy Conference

  • 5th Annual Philosophers' Cocoon Philosophy Conference – A CFP for conference or similar at University of Tampa with deadline in May, 2017. Topics: General.

  • I am pleased to announce this call-for-papers for the 5th Annual Philosophers' Cocoon Philosophy Conference, provisionally scheduled to be held at University of Tampa on October 14th-15th, 2017 (for an idea of what past years of the conference have been like see here). As in the past, the Cocoon conference will be unique in several respects: Although conference attendance will be open to all members of the profession, paper presenters must be early-career philosophers (graduate students, post-docs, untenured faculty, independent scholars, etc.). Due to travel-funding challenges that early-career philosophers often face, several sessions will be reserved for Skype presentations in which the author will be projected and field audience questions over Skype. Although commentators and audience members are encouraged to present objections to papers, the conference theme will once again be "constructive engagement", where the primary intent is to help authors to improve their work (viz. by not only raising objections, but offering and discussing possible solutions). Because publishing is one of the most difficult capacities for early-career philosophers to develop, the conference welcomes submissions of a typical full-length journal article (20-30 pages double-spaced). As a rule of thumb, the longer the paper, the higher the standards for acceptance to the conference. Extremely...

  • The market for tenure-track jobs in philosophy “was vastly better than last year’s COVID-impacted season, but still not quite up to the level of TT job ads pre-COVID.” So reports Marcus Arvan (Tampa) in his latest analysis of the academic philosophy job market, posted at The Philosophers’ Cocoon. Using PhilJobs and his previous reports as sources, Professor Arvan informs us of total number of tenure-track (TT) jobs advertised in philosophy over the past several years, beginning with the most recent cycle: 2021-22: 201 2020-21: 118 2019-20: 224 2017-18: 228 2016-17: 231 He also breaks down these numbers by areas of specialization. Here’s a visual overview: For further details, commentary, and discussion, check out the original post here.
